Spinal Reconstruction

Spinal reconstruction surgery can be life-restoring to patients with a deformity or misalignment affecting a portion of their spine. During the procedure, one or more vertebrae may be removed from the vertebral column and replaced with an artificial device or bone graft to align and stabilize the spine.

Spinal Reconstruction Surgery is considered if:

  • Severe pain is not responding to physical therapy, braces or medications
  • Spinal deformity is progressing
  • Compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots is causing pain or loss of function
  • Fractures are being caused by osteoporosis
  • A tumor needs removal

How Does Spinal Reconstruction Surgery Work?

There are four stages of Spinal Reconstruction Surgery:

  1. Fixation
    In preparation, the surgical team attaches screws and other devices into solid areas of the vertebrae above and below the vertebra to be removed. Later on in the surgery, fixed support will be needed to withstand destabilization from removing a segment of the spine.
  2. Resection
    Once the vertebra is removed, the spine is realigned. As the surgeon manipulates the spine into a more optimal alignment, care is taken to not stretch or compress the spinal cord. The curve is then straightened as much as possible by placing a rod in the attachment points.
  3. Correction
    The is the time for disassembling and removing the vertebra. For a sharp curve, one vertebra may be taken out. For a broader curve, more than one may be extracted. The surgeon works from the back of the vertebra to front taking out pieces and disconnecting the areas around the spinal canal until the entire vertebra has come out. The area is secured with the stabilization apparatus already in place.
  4. Stabilization
    Once aligned, the surgeon stabilizes the spinal column in its new position. A small, porous cage filled with bone graft is inserted in the space left by the deleted vertebra. More bone graft is used to bridge the gap. This helps the bones fuse, or grow together. As the bone graft fuses with the surrounding vertebrae, the new bone will provide long-term strength and stability.Since spinal deformity varies from patient to patient, no two surgical treatments will be the same.
